My name is Doyce Alan Testerman.

I read comic books, poetry, essays, short stories and novels,
and I treasure each type of book equally.

I wasn't born in the city,
but I'm happy here and I'm not leaving.

I'm not a native,
but then again most of us aren't.

I have an odd name because my dad thought it was cool,
not because he was a hippie, and not because I changed it when I got to college.

I can see how it may seem like you know me.
I assure you: you probably don't.

I am not a lonely techno-geek waiting for the right woman.
I've found the right woman, and it took a long fucking time.

She didn't swoop into my life and
turn me into the majestic, soaring creature she always knew that I was.

She didn't trust me when she met me.
She didn't like
that I was divorced at 24,
that I didn't balance my checkbook more than three times a year.

She made me tough because she was tough.
She expects me to stay tough and be the person she can count on.

When I succeed, she is
NEVER,
EVER,
SURPRISED.

I love music,
and when I say that, I don't need to put
'alternative', 'rap', 'folk', 'blues'
or 'techno' in there somewhere.
I love music.

I'm not a slacker,
but my job bores me sometimes.

I don't eat beef, but I'm not a vegetarian.
I like being on top of the food chain.

I do not justify my personality defects (which I have in abundance)
by blaming others:
I am obsessive
because I work better when I focus on one thing,
loud
because most people shut up if you talk over them,
and abrupt
because sometimes I can guess what you're about to say, and I'm not interested.

You are entitled to your opinion.
I am entitled to disagree with it, and sometimes
I will do that simply to stay interested in the conversation.

I'm not much of a cook,
but I make pretty damn good waffles.

I'm not learning the guitar,
I really am working on writing projects,
and I shave my head because it's quicker.

All I want is to be happy,
make my friends laugh,
and keep my family safe.
